Shanah Tovah!

Did you know… there are over 4,000 species of bees that are native to North America, but the Honey bee is NOT one of them! Dubbed “the white man’s fly” by the Native Americans, Honey bees were originally imported by the colonists from Europe in the 17th century.

While grateful for these bees who bring sweetness to our Rosh Hashanah tables, I like to stop and give thanks to the many other kinds of bees I spy in my garden while the native plants are in bloom - Carpenter bees, Sweat bees, Bumble bees, Mason bees and many more.

I found an awesome brochure about NJ native bees, put together by Rutgers U - download it here. Shana Tova - wishing you a sweet, happy, healthy year!
